Mile End Park to Greenwich Park to Victoria Park.
Ride by Caroline Fenton and Dave Allison in association with Sustrans. Easy ride ride down south to the Observatory at Greenwich Park and then back up to Victoria Park mostly following Sustrans route 1 with short stops at places of interest along the way and a chance to see and hear something about the East End now and in the past. Picnic in Victoria Park.
The Sunday morning rain didn't put off 15 pedalling picnic-ers (including three 1st-timers and two 2nd-timers). The rain though did come at the worst time, just when people would have been thinking of setting off so we're sure the numbers could have been higher. No matter, off we went to Greenwich Park to take in the view of Tower Hamlets and beyond from the Observatory and enjoy the now shining sun.
Heading back north to Victoria Park, Caroline and Dave gave us historical snippets at several locations along the route. They had also arranged a quiz for us to carry out at each stop. Travelling
from Island Gardens we took in the yard site where Brunel's Great
Eastern was built, Millwall docks, Canary riverside, Limehouse and
then up Regent's canal to Victoria Park for a splendid couple of
hours picnic-ing away.
