Car Free Day 2002 in Tower Hamlets

22 September 2002

Car Free DayTower Bridge will be closed and we'll be running some events on the north side of the bridge. We will also run a "bicycle bus" around the borough to take people to and from the event. Click here for Route Timetable & Maps.

As always we are looking for more volunteers to help out organising before and/or during the events - let us know if you'd like to help out!

Summary of the day:

  • the event at Tower Bridge is from 2-6pm.
  • from midday our bicycle bus will begin - read our press release. We will have several feeder rides starting from around the borough converging on Mile End Park's green bridge. It will then make its way to Tower Bridge winding through Whitechapel, Wapping. Route Timetable / Route Maps
  • there will be many stalls and activities on the approaches to the bridge and the bridge itself which will have areas of it converted into beaches (sand and palm trees etc.)
  • cycling related activities: Dr Bike (we will run), cycle skills/obstacle course, Rick Sure's Rikshaws will be there (and will join in with our feeder ride).
  • at 4pm and 6pm we will lead a bicycle bus back to Mile End.

Publicity:

  • the council will be promoting the event with inserts and ads going in to East End Life. Our bicycle bus pick up points will be included in this.
  • we will have loads of our brand new Wheelers postcard to handout along with our newsletters
  • maps, maps and more maps, LCC "Cycling is easier than you think" leaflets etc.

Helpers needed for:

  • bicycle bus leaders (starting points are Victoria Park, Bow Road tube and Island Gardens)
  • Cycling/Wheelers/LCC promotion - handing out our postcards, leaflets, maps etc. letting punters know how great cycling is
  • Dr Bike shifts
  • cycle skills/obstacle course
  • and anything else you might feel like doing, taking photos, getting refreshments for those on shifts etc.

Any questions, offers to help out contact Owen (7515 9905).
