RIDE: Beautiful Villages of Suffolk
Moderate paced 50 mile ride on flat country roads, taking a train to the start at Marks Tey. Passing the "most haunted house" at Borley, before lunch at the picture-postcard village of Cavendish. Then on to Lavenham, probably the most beautiful village in Suffolk, with its crooked timber framed buildings from the 14th & 15th centuries. Unique within the UK, it is the finest surviving English medieval village. Plenty of time here for tea and a good look round. Then on to Dedham, as painted by Constable, for more tea before taking the train back from Manningtree. Join us for quite possibly your best day out this summer!
Meet 9.00am at Stratford Station [map] for 9.25 departure. Return train fare £17 but we can reduce this with Group Savers or Network cards. (Alternatively, catch the train earlier at 9.18 from Liverpool St, buying a cheap day return for Manningtree £19.)

RIDE: Absolute Beginners' Mountain Biking in Epping Forest
Ambling around Epping Forest as a gentle introduction to the best mountain biking to be had in east London. There will be roots, twisty, turny singletrack, mud and plenty of thrills (and possibly a few spills) - but all at an easy pace and with plenty of encouragement for newcomers to offroad riding. People will be able to tackle the bits they want to, and not the bits they don't. We'll ride as much (or as little) as everyone wants to. With a pub stop somewhere in the middle.
Helmets required, eyewear/eye protection, mountain bikes in good working nick, lots of water all strongly suggested.
Meet 10.20am at Bethnal Green rail station, Dunbridge Street [map] to catch train to Chingford.
Contact Simon.
Reports & photos from previous Wheelers rides.
Sunday, 6th August
Easy RIDE: The Vineyard Ride
30 miles at an easy pace around Headcorn and Rye area in Kent.
Go on a lovely ride via Sissinghurst Castle for tea and cake to Chapeldown Vineyard where we can lunch in posh bistro or buy grub from almost as posh wine & food shop and eat on tables outside (warning no bread, might want to take a french stick or two!). If you feel energetic take a stroll around the vineyard or buy the rosé of the summer (according to Time Out) after quaffing a couple of tasters. Then onto Rye where we may have time to stop for a drink before catching train home. Plenty of gentle off road of varying surfaces, my hybrid coped but it was bumpy/gravelly/grassy so come prepared! About 30 miles, we'll go steady (don't want wine bottles breaking), I'd describe it as undulating!
Meet at 9am directly at London Bridge (by Upper Crust) in time to get group discount tickets or 8.15am on top of the Green Bridge, Mile End Park [map] for feeder ride to London Bridge.
We will be catching the 9.32am train to Headcorn.

Meet on top of the Green Bridge, Mile End Park [map] ready to leave promptly at 6.15pm or 6.45pm outside Madame Tussaud's, Marylebone Road. Other pickup points on the way. Contact Keith 07944 177343 for more details. Owen will lead the ride from the Green Bridge 07903 018970.

A leisurely tour of some of the grand old Victorian cemeteries in London. Bring your swim suit and we can stop for an optional swim at Hampstead Heath to cool off. And of course there will be plenty of cafe stops on the way.

RIDE: The Nasty, Ugl(e)y Ride
In spite of their names, Ugley (Essex) and Nasty (Herts) are two pretty country villages. But I couldn't resist trying to link them up in one ride, which will also feature as many other oddly-named villages as I can fit into a 50 mile loop (Furneux Pelham and Puckeridge, for starters).
Moderately paced 50 mile ride - nobody gets left behind. Pub/café stops lunch and mid-afternoon. Shortened route if bad weather. Special prize for ugliest/nastiest cycling gear.

Easy RIDE: 30hirty-Something - Gary's Farewell Ride
It's nearly thirty years (1977) since I set up home in London from grotty old Grays in Essex. Soon though I'll be leaving the smoke behind so a commemorative farewell ride is in order.

It'll be a scenic, occasionally spoken, but definitely easy ride about town. We will visit the sites of my former homes in: Regents Park (not the zoo)-High Street Ken-Hackney Road-New Cross-Stepney. Also some sites of long gone boozers. We can find a suitable family orientated lunch stop on the way and bring back some memories.
