New Year Get Together
The evening will be an informal opportunity to eat, drink, chat about bikes and what we are up to in Tower Hamlets.
Meet at 7.30pm at the Vesuvio cafe on Three Colt Street, Limehouse and we'll get started on the food straight away!
The usual menu will be available at Vesuvio's, but they have asked us to give them a list of our choices the day before so they can be ready for us. Numbers are limited so please let David Tuckwell and Caroline Fenton know as soon as possible by e-mail if you wish to attend and then also by Tuesday (22nd) morning advise your choice of starter and main course.

Join our neighbours for their 12th annual Burns Night fundraising supper & dance. Haggis, neeps, tatties, recitations, songs, and then three hours of dancing to The Muckers, or propping up the bar. Tickets in advance only. Book soon because it always sells out. Full details and tickets.

Sunday, 3rd February
Easy RIDE: Lea Valley Loop
Lee Valley, Epping Forest, Essex Weald nearly circular ride (40 miles, 2.5 muffins estimated) Upminster finish, train back [route map]. First section up Lea Valley off road and easy, then on road with some hills. For a lower muffin rating come with us as far as Enfield Lock, then turn back and return by the same route.
Morning cafe stop at Springfield Marina, lunch Epping Forest (pub or take away cafe or bring picnic if weather is good), afternoon tea at Weald Country park.
Meet at 9.30am on top of the Green Bridge at Mile End Park [map].
For return train travel, Oyster pay as you go is valid, also Group save tickets can be bought (3 or 4 for the price of 2). Return can be to District Line (eg Mile End) or Limehouse.

Wheels & Heels: The New Season's Accessories
As part of London Fashion Week come along to Columbia Road from 6.00pm where current innovative cycling design by local, independent designers will be showcased to attract more people to cycling. Hackney and Tower Hamlets councils are running the event and we'll be joining in in some shape or form.

RIDE: Highgate Hill Ride
25 miles, 2000+ft of climbing in 4.5 hours, average speed 10mph, go at own pace uphills. We'll cycle the back roads to Islington heading for Tufnell Park. Then Dartmouth Park Hill, Highgate Village (1mile uphill), Archway A1, Cranley Gardens, Muswell Hill, Alexander Palace, Wood Green, bottom of Muswell Hill, past Hornsey Station, Crouch Hill to bottom, up to Hornsey Lane over A1, Highgate Village, back to Muswell Hill and up Shepherds Hill. Will fit in a cafe stop at Muswell Hill. Then all downhill and flat return to Bethnal Green.

Easy RIDE: Thames Path eastwards
We plan to go out via North Woolwich and the ferry and return via Greenwich (or vice versa - trying to work out which gives the best tea stop opportunities). We will aim to get as far as Dartford (cafe lunch) where you can easily get a train back to Greenwich if you want a shorter day. Total distance will be around 40 miles.

RIDE: Weekend away in Essex/Suffolk
We have booked the new Stour Valley bunkhouse near Manningtree for our exclusive use. On Saturday and Sunday we are planning to organise at least two rides - one relatively easy, the other a little more challenging (or with less time for sightseeing and eating and drinking!), on Friday you can get there after work, or if you can get the day off, join us for a ride out there (possibly from Colchester) or just do your own thing.
Cost for bed, breakfast and one communally cooked evening meal max £55.

Bicycle Marking Open Day
Limehouse Safer Neighbourhood Team will be at the junction of Three Colt Street and the Thames path, next to the rear of Dundee Wharf from 12 noon-2:00pm and 4:00-6:00pm. By completing a quick registration form officers will issue your bicycle with a sticker & reference number unique to your bike and register your bicycle on the immobilise.com database. This is a quick and free service, which can help in reporting the loss or theft of your bicycle.

Easy RIDE: Graveyards of northern London
In a continuation of last year's smashing exploration of the big 7 Victorian cemeteries, we will explore some of the northern London cemeteries. We will start at a maybe overlooked cemetery close to home, Tower Hamlets Cemetery. Then move on to Abney Park in Stoke Newington. If the day is warm, we will stop for a swim at Hampstead Heath, and round off the day with a look through Highgate Cemetery. We will find lunch along the way.

RIDE: 16th Dunwich Dynamo
Set off at 9pm with several hundred others from London Fields for an overnight and hopefully moonlit ride of 120 miles to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast. Full details including return transport on this Dunwich Dynamo FAQ page.

Saturday, 2nd August
Medium RIDE: Beautiful Villages of Suffolk
Moderate paced 50 mile ride on mostly flat country roads, taking a train to the start at Marks Tey. We'll pass the Colne Valley in the morning, before lunch at the picture-postcard village of Cavendish. Then on to Lavenham, probably the most beautiful village in Suffolk, with its crooked timber-framed buildings from the 14th & 15th centuries. Unique within the UK, it is the finest surviving English medieval village. Plenty of time here for tea and a good look round. Then on through the quiet lanes of Constable country before taking the train back from Manningtree. Join us for quite possibly your best day out this summer! (2006 ride report)
» Meet at 8.55am at Liverpool St Station for 9.18 departure. Buy a cheap day return for Manningtree. Normal fare is £21, but we can reduce this with Group Savers or Network cards. (Alternatively, catch the train from Stratford at 9.25.)

Easy RIDE: Ace Cafe
A Wheelers favourite - easy 12 mile ride to the Ace Cafe, Stonebridge Park - the popular haunt of motorcycle enthusiasts. Good and reasonably priced food awaits you at the destination. The evening we are going is Italian bike night therefore, you'll be particularly welcomed if you arrive on an Italian bike (Bianchi, Colonago etc).
» Meet on top of the Green Bridge, Mile End Park [map] ready to leave promptly at 6.15pm or 6.45pm outside Madame Tussaud's, Marylebone Road.
Other pickup points on the way: 6:30pm canal at the Overdraught pub on the corner of Haggerston Rd & Dunston Rd; 6:40pm east end of the Islington Tunnel, the corner of Colebrooke Row & Duncan St; 6:50pm west end of Islington tunnel, Muriel Street; 7:20pm Paddington Basin at the opposing statues under the Westway (by PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY); 7:45pm canal at Sainsburys Kensal Green.
Ride or train or tube or some combination of any of those to get back. Don't forget your lights and call if you think you might be late to the start points.

Easy/Medium RIDE: The Secret Bunker
Take District Line out to Upminster then 10 miles to Kelvedon Hatch and the Secret Bunker (admission £6.50). Lunch in underground canteen or bring picnic, then 12 miles to Theydon Bois optional drop out point to take the Central Line back to Leyton. Otherwise carry on up into Epping Forest for tea at High Beech and then return down the Lee Valley towpath and tracks maybe finishing off the day in the Palm Tree in Mile End Park. About 40 miles for the full route.
» Meet at 9.00am on top of the Green Bridge, Mile End Park [map] to then take the District Line out to Upminster. Train out/back is £1 each way if you have an Oyster card, otherwise £3 single/£4.80 day travelcard. If you want to meet us at Upminster please let me know - we expect to be there around 9.45am.

Sunday, 7th September
Easy RIDE: The Cuckoo Trail
Always popular Wheelers ride of 30 easy miles starting and ending in Polegate, East Sussex near Eastbourne. From Polegate we meander up the Cuckoo Trail (an old railway track) to Horam for coffee. Then take lanes across the Weald to Berwick, with Firle Beacon on the South Downs firmly in view and have lunch. We then ride down the Cuckmere valley to the beach at Cuckmere Haven and possible swim if warm and the tide is in. The last part of the ride is off-road through Friston Forest back to Polegate.
We'll be catching the 9.47am train from Victoria station and will meet our ride leader Jane at Polegate.

Car Free Day - "Give your Car the Day Off"
The council is organising a street festival on Saunders Ness Road at the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs to encourage as many residents and employees on the Isle - and elsewhere in Tower Hamlets - to walk or cycle to their destinations rather than use the car. Full details of all the activities (bike try out, BMX displays, Rollapaluza etc.) at towerhamlets.gov.uk/carfreeday.
We will be there all day providing a Dr Bike service for anyone who stops by.

3rd-5th October
RIDE: Wheelers 5th Annual Autumn Weekend Away
We're off to Bristol, staying in the YHA Hostel down by the old docks. There is some good cycling country within very easy reach of the city centre - including the Mendips and Cheddar gorge, north into Gloucestershire, also the possibility of an exhilarating ride over the Severn bridge to Wales, and exploration of some local off road cycle routes such as the Bristol to Bath railway path.
We would propose to have a Friday ride for those who can get the day off work then rides on Saturday and Sunday. Depending on numbers there could be a choice of routes of different distances.
Budget for about £50 for the train fare and £19 per night inc. breakfast. We'll probably eat out though food can obviously be cooked at the hostel.
If you are interested please e-mail Caroline asap - we will need some money fairly quickly as we will have to pay for the hostel places up front.

Ride east along the Thames to see the Crossness Pumping Station engines in steam (admission £5). Total ride distance will be about 20 miles keeping away from busy roads.

We can only get through so much during our monthly meetings. Join us for an extended edition where we'll be more able to discuss and develop in more detail the numerous ideas many of us have for Wheelers' campaigns, projects, rides etc.

Special Event: Bicycle Bits Swap Shop - bring along any spare bike bits you don't want anymore and come along if you're looking for any bike bits. You can clear out some of your junk or at last get that bicycle project finished. Coincides nicely with Buy Nothing Day.

Easy RIDE: Breakfast Ride
Cafe breakfast at about 9:30am, destination will be along the Lea Valley or along the Thames - to be announced on the day. 15-20 miles in total.

Monthly Wheelers Meeting
Meet at St Margarets House, 21 Old Ford Road [map] 7.30-9.00pm. This is when we plan what we'll be getting up to. Everyone welcome. Followed by a visit to a local pub from 9.15pm. Contact .

Moderate RIDE: Southend in Winter Ride
We'll take the tube to Upminster, lunch at Hanningfield Reservoir, drop down to Southend, check out any Christmas lights, drink tea and eat chips and/or cake and then train back from Chalkwell. Approximately 45 miles. The pace will be moderate - brisk enough to stay warm, but not so fast that you need a racing bike to keep up! Mostly country lanes and minor roads, but a few short stretches of busier traffic at some points.

Easy RIDE: Christmas Lights Afterworker
Join us for our seasonal meander around the borough taking in the delights of the Christmas lights displays.
The ride will end by 7.30pm at Departure, the fairly new arts centre in Limehouse, for this free event: The Christmas Story Through Artistic Eyes - A Word & Image Presentation by Stuart Currie with seasonal refreshments.

Easy RIDE: Christmas Lights Ride
A further meander around the borough to enjoy more of the Christmas lights.
Ride ends at the 6.00pm candle-lit carol service at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, Bow E3 3QX. Mince pies can of course be expected.
