New cycle facilities
Gary spent an evening discussing the merits of the borough's cycle facilities with our cycling officer Matthew Hill. This is a summary of his meeting.
Hanbury Street A couple of years ago Princelet Street in Spitalfields was made one way eastbound. This denied cyclists a very convenient access to the city. I received more calls about this from members of the group than any other single issue. It has taken some time but finally a suitable alternative will be put in place in Hanbury Street. This will be made two way for cycles, but will have an island at the Brick Lane end with a cycle gap (denying access to motor vehicles). From Hanbury Street (where this route links up with the existing Market Porters route) westbound cyclists will then cross Commercial Street, via an island. This improvement is part of a new east-west cycle route which runs from Vallance Road to the city. Matthew told me at least part of this route will be implemented within the next three months.
Cable Street This route has been buried under a series of telecoms cable laying exercises but it should be finished by now. There are a number of improvements scheduled to happen here in the new year and begin as follows. Relocation and replacement of the illuminated traffic islands. I have asked that all the islands be resited or replaced so that they do not intrude into the cycle lane as many do at present. Some of the islands will be removed altogether. Motorists tend to park in the cycle lane near Devonport Street where it passes a long parade of shops. The promised enforcement of parking restrictions never happened here, so there will be a continuous traffic island running for some distance either side of and all alongside the parade. This will stop motorists parking in the cycle lane. At the junction with Cannon Street Road there is to be a set of traffic lights with a cyclist operated signal. The other signaliing problem was at the Leman Street junction, which although it had its own cycle lane seemed to fail to detect a cyclist presence on the road surface pressure plates. This problem should be cured by now. There is still no definate answer to the conundrum which faces westbound Cable Street users at Tower Hill, where the local authority becomes the City of London, but the borough are working on it.
Mile End Road I had been promised a chance to see the new proposals straight after Christmas. The Borough have slipped with this date. Hopefully all will be revealed in the next newsletter.

A workable workshop
Since we sent loads of stock to the Caribbean (see below) there is now some room to actually work on cyclesm, run maintenance classes and build bikes from the second hand parts we accumulate. If you have some spare time or skills to donate we always have a few part built 'projects' that need working on. The workshop is open for maintenance from 7.30 until around 9.30 every Wednesday evening. |

East End bikes sent to Haiti and Africa
In November, Gary, the borough co-ordinator and Kris Watson, one of the workshop manage team, prepared a shipment of cycle parts, including wheels, hubs, chains and lots of other good workable stock for carriage to Haiti. This van load of parts was part of a consignment of cycles and spares sent to Haiti for a charity called Re-Cycle, run by ex-LSE student and Wheeler Merlin Matthews. Re-cycle is a small charity aimed at helping relieve poverty in the Caribbean by sending out bikes and parts, establishing training workshops, providing jobs and much needed transport infrastructure. These workshops are proving to be useful community resources in other ways, such as construction plants for wind generators and water pumps, all made from.....old bike parts. For more details of Re-Cycle contact Merlin Matthews on 01206 383906. |

Other wonderful websites
Our neighbours in Hackney have a super website, as do the Camden Group, Wheelers have a basic website. This begs the question, can it be improved? If you have the time and expertise to improve our site or even design one for us from scratch, as well as keep it running in cyberspace please help. You can email us at the address on the back, meet us at the workshop on Wednesday nights or mail us via snailmail, address at back. |

Wheelers Sportif
Martin Harris, ex borough co-ordinator and veteran of the Paris-Roubaix road race route would be happy to take a few people up to the Eastway circuit for some road training practice. This is nothing too serious but a fun way to get fit, and possibly improve your road riding technique. If you fancy joining him for a few evenings during the dull winter nights call 0777 190 8413. |

Wheelers 3rd Great Beigal Race
This famous annual sporting event will take place on Saturday 10th April. For new members of Wheelers, this is a friendly road race between as many forms of transport as possible. In the past there have been bicycles (naturally) the mayor in his borough Limo, a horse and cart, a London black cabm carsm cycle rickshaws and even pedetrians. The race begins at the Brick Lane Beigal Bakery and will travel across the borough obeying all the traffic laws to end at a yet undecided venue. The distance covered tends to be around 3-5 miles. Wheelers have both the last two events and naturally want to win the next. If you want to be included as a participant or helper contact Genia who is marshalling the race on 0171 377 1822. |

Cycle maintenance classes
These classes continue to operate approximately every 4-6 weeks, they run from around 10.00am to 4pm on Sundays and cover: types of cyclem how a cycle works, routine maintenance and puncture repair. They do not go into unnecessary mind boggling technical detail unless requested. Each class ends with an overview and general service of your bike.
The class costs £10.00 and must be booked in advance with Helen Williams on 0181 555 6127. |

Critical Mass
Trafalgar Square is really a gloomy venue for new year celebrations, no fountains, no beer or bands but this year a special Hogmanay Critical Mass got the place jumping. Armed with a four wheeled pedal powered sound system dolling out lots of cheer, the Mass rode around the West End via the square and was on the receiving end of sackloads of merriment before rolling on to a party. Some Wheelers, as always, were in attendance.
Critical Mass meeets last Friday of each month under Waterloo Bridge at 6.00pm. |

Cable Street closure
The Borough has announced the temporary suspension of the cycle lane in Cable Street between Caroline Street, Devenport Street and Cannon Street Road. Starting from 3rd November for around six weeks cyclists will be required to walk their cycles along the footway while works are in progress. This is so that remedial works can be carried out on the road.
The Royal Mint Street section of this route, that is the western end near the Tower, is now permanent, having undergone a trial period. The question remains, where do westbound cyclists go from here, as one currently faces a dismount sign and the Tower Hill gyratory. Answers and suggestions welcomed. |

New cycle and bus lane in Prestons Road
Prestons Road, Isle of Dogs, is to have a new bus lane installed. This will mean losing a section of the recently installed cycle lane. We are not wild about this. On being consulted, Wheelers suggested the borough make the new bus lane 24 hours, giving protection to cyclists at all times. The borough appear to have dismissed this suggestion and plan to make the bus lane a 12 hour operation, from 7am to 7pm on weekdays only, travelling in a northbound direction. |
