Car Free Day is a 'wheely' great success for Tower Hamlets Wheelers
Isle of Dogs-based Tower Hamlets Wheelers (1) enjoyed a great day of cycling
fun on Tower Bridge with Rick Sure's Rickshaws (2) and cyclists in the East
End on European Car Free Day, last Sunday 22nd September (3).
The Wheelers teamed up with the rickshaws to put on four 'bicycle bus'
routes to escort cyclists from various locations in Tower Hamlets to Tower
Bridge, providing colourful maps (4). The first three 'buses' converged on
the award-winning Green Bridge in Mile End Park, bringing together around
twenty people and various weird and wonderful bikes. They then all made
their way down to the car-free festivities on Tower Bridge, accompanied by a
portable sound-system on the back of a bike trailer!
"People couldn't help stopping and smiling as we went past," says Owen
Pearson, Wheelers co-ordinator. "At times we held up the traffic but drivers
didn't seem to mind."
When they reached the bridge, the rickshaws gave free rides and the Wheelers
teamed up with Youth Action UK to provide a bicycle obstacle course which
kids took part in for free all afternoon.

(1) The Tower Hamlets Wheelers is the local cycle action group in the east
London Borough of Tower Hamlets, campaigning for better cycling facilities
and encouraging more people to cycle - for health, the environment and for
London. The Wheelers are affiliated to the London Cycling Campaign, the
largest urban cycling campaign in the world.
(2) This not-for-profit company in Tower Hamlets brought back authentic
rickshaws from Bangladesh.
(3) Car Free Day is a European initiative to close town centres to motorised
traffic for one day per year. In London several roads were closed, showing
how pleasant the street environment can be without cars.
