Mile End Park's 'Get Moving!' healthy exercise event is a great success

An event to highlight healthy exercise activities on offer in Tower Hamlets was held in Mile End Park on Sunday 20th July by the Friends of Mile End Park (1) in conjunction with with other local organisations. Among them were Tower Hamlets Wheelers (2), Mile End Climbing Wall, Victoria Park Harriers and West Ham United. Local residents and users of the east London park were able to take part in a variety of activities for free, showing how the physical activity in the park can be fun and good for you.

Several hundred local people took part in free sessions of football, wall-climbing, narrow boat trips, yoga, Bollywood/Irish/African dancing, rock 'n' roll, a Chisenhale dance workshop, athletics, walking, guided cycle rides, Dr Bike, cycle obstacle course and rickshaw rides.

Event organiser Lizzie Treip says: "Get Moving! was a fantastic success where many local residents were able to try out for free activities they may not have tried before, but that are all on offer in Tower Hamlets."

Tower Hamlets Wheelers Co-ordinator Owen Pearson says: "Our bicycle obstacle course was an overwhelming success. The number of children wanting to take up the tricky challenge grew bigger as the day went by! Our free guided bike rides round the park were also very popular with the kids."

Volunteer stewards from Tower Hamlets Summer Uni helped the event run smoothly, and the Friends of Mile End Park would like to thank Victoria Park Parks Department and all the organisations taking part in the event (3) and the agencies helping to fund it and supporting it. The event was funded by the Bow People's Trust and the Friends of Mile End Park.

Friends of Mile End Park aim to hold another similar event next summer.
