PEDAL POWER WINS THE GREAT BEIGEL RACE AGAIN

The bicycle again proved to be the fastest around the streets of Tower Hamlets in the seventh running of the Great Beigel Race held on Saturday, 5th June.

The annual fun challenge organised by local cycle group Tower Hamlets Wheelers is between people using different modes of transport to carry a beigel and other food items across the borough.

Owen Pearson, Wheelers Co-ordinator explains: "This is a fun way for us as a cycle group to promote cycling as an easy, healthy and cheap way of travelling. The evidence is always in the result of this race."

Starting from outside Beigel Bake in Brick Lane, entrants had to first collect a bag of sweets from Nagina Sweet Centre on Cannon Street Road then travel to Ivy's Cafe in Chrisp Street Market to collect a saveloy or helping of pease pudding before finishing at ASDA on the Isle of Dogs.

Wheelers Events Officer, Keith Jones said: "This year we put real pressure on the cyclists by inviting motorcycles to take part. The result though once again highlights the ease and efficiency you can travel around town by bicycle."

The times over the 6 mile route were as follows:
Bicycle: 23.27 mins
Motorbike & sidecar: 25.00
Motorbike: 25:40
Bicycle: 29.16
Van: 32.07
Bicycle: 32.55
Bicycle: 45.35
Bicycle & trailer: 52.30
3 Bicycles all at: 52.53
Bicycle, bus & DLR: 57.27

The winning bicycle was ridden by Wheelers Rides Co-ordinator, Steve Collins. After being awarded the traditional winner's wreath of beigels he commented: "My time was obviously fast but even the slower cyclists' times show using a bicycle really is a great way to quickly do your errands and of course keep fit at the same time."
