EAST ENDER LEADS CYCLISTS IN £33,000 FUNDRAISER THROUGH ETHIOPIA
- photos available -
A CHARITY bike ride through Ethiopia, led by East End resident Steve Collins, has raised more than £33,000 for Maternity Worldwide.
Steve, 41, an Electrician from Bethnal Green, volunteered to lead a team of
12 cyclists, some new to cycling, over a tough 320 km route through the West Highlands of the country last month.
The ride began at the capital city Adis Abbaba and followed a challenging route over poorly paved roads to Maternity Worldwide's centre in Gimbie, Western Ethiopia.
Steve, who is also the Rides Coordinator for local cycling group the Tower Hamlets Wheelers said:
"Leading the ride through Ethiopia was an amazing experience. The ride was pretty tough at times but it was all worthwhile when we reached the maternity centre at the end of the six days and saw how vital the centre is for local women and their newborn babies."
Maternity Worldwide is running a similar fundraiser next year. For more information, visit www.maternityworldwide.org
