Notes from Wheelers Meeting held on 11 June 2003
at Limehouse Town Hall, Commercial Road, E14
Present: Owen Pearson (chair), Tom Brenan (secretary), Alix Stredwick, Colin Waters, Dave Allison, Greg Osimowcz, Keith Jones, Gary Cummins
1. Introduction
Everyone introduced themselves with a welcome to Greg.
2. Actions from last meeting, 14 May 2003
Borough Spending Plan 2004/05 will be finished in July.
Wheelers now members of Community Organisations Forum (COF).
Alix to join Voluntary Action Tower Hamlets.
All other outstanding matters to be covered in following items.
3. Newsletter & Media
Newsletter handout took place Wednesday (6 June) morning - about 250 distributed.
Deadline for articles for the July issue is 29 June and August issue is 13 July.
Brief coverage of Bike Week in East End Life and expected in Newham Recorder. Also events to be mentioned in Evening Standard's Metrolife magazine.
4. Finances
Paperwork to be filled in for Dave to become authorised signatory of bank account.
Community Chest funding now received and paid in.
ACTION:
Dave, Owen and Alix to deal with bank account paperwork.
5. CC T-shirt
Have now received the refund of £98 from t-shirt company P21.
Only one person wanted a refund on delivery of t-shirt.
Sold nearly 70, so about 30 left.
Profit so far about £400.
ACTION:
Have them on sale during Bike Week.
6. Rides & Events
Gary Cummins has stepped down as Rides & Events Organiser. Steve Collins had informed Owen that he would like to volunteer for the position but just to restrict it to rides. This was agreed with the post to be called Rides Organiser.
Rides announced:
12 July : Dunwich Dynamo
19 July : Tour of the Chilterns led by Colin Waters
Alix will probably do an easy ride in August.
ACTION:
Steve to draw up rides programme for coming months.
7. Workshop & Bike Re-Cycling
About four people turned up to May's workshop.
Before next workshop: sign for the door, checklists to be finalised, purchase a few more tools, source nuts and bolts.
Agreed to organise demonstrations for future workshops.
Next workshop on 28 June, 11-3pm.
ACTION:
List of tools need to be drawn up at next workshop.
Keith to source supply of nuts and bolts.
Alix to produce map of route from workshop to Bicycle Magic.
8. Borough Cycle Schemes
Congestion Charge Zone boundary traffic calming schemes
ACTION: Owen to finish and circulate notes from consultation meetings...
Aldgate Gyratory
March cycle count stats now on the website.
TfL does acknowledge a long term plan to remove the gyratory but when and how is dependent on other development in the area.
Agreed to use this issue for our petition during Bike Week i.e. supporting the long-term plan to revert the gyratory to two-way.
ACTION:
Alix to get a petition ready for Bike Week.
Owen to create a web version.
9. Campaigns
Illegal Parking in Cycle Lanes
A group cycled around to record illegal parking 21 May but got the timing wrong and there was not much evidence to gather. Some photos have already been taken by Helen Waters.
ACTION: Colin to organise another event.
Amenity Cycling Parking in Tower Hamlets
In progress but on the back burner. Information slowly being gathered. Lack of parking at Museum in Docklands and Idea Store, Roman Road highlighted.
ACTION: Caroline & Alix to draft a template letter.
10. Thames Gateway Bridge
Concerning proposed road bridge between Becton and Thamesmead currently going through public consultation process which ends mid-August. Proposed that those interested in the impact of this scheme should form a working group to discuss the pros and cons and come up with a Wheelers response.
ACTION: Owen to email group on this topic.
11. Training & Buddying Scheme
Launch to be postponed until July (planning for Bike Week has taken over).
First trainee successfully joined in on Wheelers ride to Dulwich Park.
ACTION:
Alix to draft a press release.
Owen to do a web page for whole scheme.
Steve to produce promotional poster.
Alix to contact all buddy volunteers.
12. Bike Week
The week's events were discussed in turn with final preparations needed being noted.
Minutes written up after Bike Week so full list of actions omitted.
13. AOB - post meeting note
Owen has been contacted by the property owners of Petticoat Lane Market. They are looking into the feasibility of have a cycling section at the Sunday market and would welcome support from Wheelers and other LCC groups. The offer of providing a Wheelers/LCC stall is a possibility.
The meeting closed about 8.40pm and most headed off to The Grapes, Narrow Street.
Next meeting: 7.00pm, 9 July, at Limehouse Town Hall.
