Notes from Wheelers Meeting held on 11 February 2004
at Wharf Cycles, Westferry Road E14

1. Introductions
All introduced themselves. A note of thanks to Phil and Jo for the use of their office.
2. Matters arising from last meeting, 14 January 2003
All outstanding matters to be covered in following items.
3. Newsletter, Media & Website
Newsletter:
Copy deadline for next issue 12 March.
Agreed to get increase distribution of newsletter around the borough in cafes, shops, libraries etc.
Steve B suggested obtaining leaflet display holders to give to newsletter outlets.
ACTIONS:
Carol and Steve to produce newsletter.
Carol to ask for volunteers for newsletter distribution and for locations.
Steve to source/price leaflet holders.

Owen to finish off updates to Media section of site.
4. Finances
Dave requested all outstanding expenses to be submitted.
Have been contacted by DfT with regard to our Cycling Projects Fund award. Now time for claim to be submitted. Dave has itemised £847.51 of expenses related to the Bike Buddy Scheme and Workshop that we will submit.
ACTIONS:
Dave and Owen to submit claim to DfT.
5. Bike Buddy & Cycle Training Scheme
Agreed a re-launch of the scheme is needed.
Kerry to interview some of the scheme members as a basis for a press release towards the end of March.
Keith has compiled a list of all of the borough's doctors surgeries and is doing the same for the students' unions.
Produce action plan timetable at March meeting.
ACTIONS:
Carol to produce cover letter to be sent out with scheme publicity material.
Steve C/Owen to produce poster.
Owen/Caroline to pass on contact details of suitable scheme members to Kerry.
6. Workshop & Bike Re-Cycling
Workshop:
January workshop went well with nine punters attending.
The next workshop is on 28 February 2004.
Noted that it will be the first birthday of the "new" workshop in March - do something extra?
ACTIONS:
Keith to publicise puncture repair class on egroup.
Bike Re-Cycling:
Currently four bikes waiting maintenance before being made available. Keith has got one more bike.
Keith has applied for a garage which if successful would make space available for Wheelers bikes/equipment.
ACTIONS:
Owen, Caroline and Dave to get bikes road worthy for passing onto buddy scheme members.
7. CC Anniversary Event
"Cycle for FREE!" banner to be displayed on the CCZ boundary at Aldgate Gyratory between 7-9am on Tuesday, 17 February. Agreed to produce another banner with the message "Drive for £2000".
ACTIONS:
Kerry to send out press release.
Banner production volunteers to produce banner on Sat, 14 Feb.
Banner displaying volunteers to turn up on 17 February.
8. Borough Traffic Schemes
Old Montague Street: LBTH is proposing to close this road and has requested views on two options for the scheme. Both would allow cycle access, one would allow emergency vehicle access via a gate. Agreed that either option was acceptable as long as the widths of the cycle tracks were to at least minimum standards.
ACTIONS:
Owen to pass on comments to LBTH.
Cable Street: Owen still pressing LBTH with our request to install a stop sign at the Watney Street junction.
ACTIONS:
Owen to continue pressing.
9. Thames Gateway Cycling Strategy
There is a survey on the Thames Gateway Cycling Strategy website. No volunteers to co-ordinate a group response.
ACTIONS:
Owen to publicise survey web address to egroup and encourage individuals to respond.
Owen to ask for a volunteer to co-ordinate a group response.
Owen to liaise with neighbouring borough groups about submitting a joint LCC response.
10. Campaigning
Cycle Carriage on DLR: Awaiting response from John Biggs.
Bike Theft: Suggestion from Hackney Cyclists about setting up supervised bike park at Brick Lane - any thoughts for a location?
11. Rides, Socials & Events
Upcoming rides on the website diary page and in Feb/Mar newsletter.
Events:
Keith will present an events strategy at March meeting.
12. AOB
Steve B noted that the District line is to be closed between Whitechapel & Earls Court for 17 weekends soon - opportunity to promote cycle use?
After theft of two of the Barts and The Royal London NHS Trust pool bikes, Keith is to offer them advice on security.
The meeting closed at 8:50pm and most crossed the road to the Rogue Trader pub.
Next meeting: 7.00pm, 10 March, venue tba.
