Breakfast Ride 29 November 2009
Pinning our hopes on the BBC and Metcheck forecasts being right (both said no rain until the afternoon) we set off from the Green Bridge. Showers came and went (not as forecast but tolerable) as we went along the canal, up over Islington tunnel, then re-joined the towpath as far as Camden. This being a David T led ride we were treated to lots of interesting snippets of history, some fried chicken related trivia (see rides on 25 Mar and 18 Jun) and views of some rather nice houses tucked away on traffic free streets. A gradual climb up towards Gospel Oak took its toll on one bike with stop to confirm a loose crank diagnosis. It was tightened (a bit) with pliers (ride leaders don't carry crank nut tools) more than once before we arrived at our breakfast destination, the Bistro Laz near the bottom of Hampstead Heath.
The breakfast was good, and the lack of flexibility of the cafe staff to swap ingredients around was more than compensated by the group ensuring that between us everything on every plate was consumed, but not necessarily by the person who had ordered it!
As we set off it was raining - no more showers with gaps between, this was the real thing. We stopped at Cycle Surgery on Holloway Road who tightened the offending crank bolt better than we could (they did have the right tools) and then made our way, getting soggier and soggier, back to Bethnal Green and Mile End. The weather may not have been sunny but the company certainly was - so thanks to Cecilia, Karen, Bob and David for turning out and continuing to smile.
