Dangerous Junctions Ride aka Tour du Danger

Saturday, 12 November 2011 - 9:00am - 2:00pm

A feeder ride to the "Top Ten most dangerous junctions in London for bikes" ride organised by Danny of Cyclists in the City blog and Mark of ibikelondon.

Meet at the Green Bridge at 09.00 and we'll cycle as a group to Oval where the main ride starts, with time for a quick coffee break when we get there. Details of the main ride can be found on the cyclelondoncity and ibikelondon blogs.

The main ride will be fully marshalled and is being supported by LCC centrally. With the number of cyclists expected those junctions should be relatively easy to negotiate, but there will still be quite a lot of riding on main roads.

Ride difficulty:
Easy
Ride distance:
20 miles

About 20 met at the Green Bridge for the feeder ride to the start of the "Tour du Danger" down at Oval organised by the cyclelondoncity, ibikelondon blogs and marshalled by LCC members. For over half of those that came along this was their first Wheelers ride. Further still, several of those were not particularly confident cyclists but wanted to add their voice to the increasingly noisy demands to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

At Oval we joined up with an estimated 300 protestors. ibikelondon blogger Mark lead proceedings first holding a minute silence to commemorate the recent cyclist deaths at Bow roundabout and Kings Cross.

We then set off on one of, if not the best marshalled mass rides that any of us could remember. The ride flowed along its route visiting the 10 most dangerous junctions as determined by Transport for London's accident statistics. After a couple hours of never before experienced relaxed riding round some awful layouts and gyratories we ended up at cycling cafe Look Mum No Hands on Old Street.

Most of us Wheelers decided to head back east via a quiet pedal along Regents Canal. Also in search of some refreshment we fortunately stumbled across an impromptu pizza stall set up by the towpath! Not ones to turn down made-to-order wood oven baked pizza after a morning's ride we tucked in.

BBC London News included coverage of the ride in its report on the second fatality at Bow roundabout.
