Christmas Lights Ride! 12 December 2004
Wheelers were in fine voice last night for our seasonal concert of carols
and festive lights.
Meeting on the green bridge at dusk on a chilly sabbath, a score of THW's
followed the lights in the sky and enjoyed the son et lumier that is Tower
Hamlets at Christmas, Salmon Lane, Chrisp Street were two particularly
excellent examples, as well as Dod Street and Cephas Street.
Then on to the Carol service at St Johns, taken by Fr Alan Green, himself a
cycling participant in the Great Biegal race, we took our cycles into the
church and parked them in the left hand pews, where they stood happily
lowing quietly throughout the service. St Johns had a wonderful choir, with
some incredibly powerful female voices that shook the beautiful Grade 1
listed Soane building. These were accompanied by Wheelers own male voice
section made up of among others:
'Doc' Keith Jones (Tenor Bass)
Owen Pearson (Double Bass)
Gary Cummins (2 pints of Bass please)
Janice, Neville and Gareth did not let the side down vocally either.
Fr Alan even made a public apology, for not being able to source any
bicycling related material among the scriptures!
Immediately after the service the church laid on home made mince pies and
mulled wine. Lovely!
I do like Christmas.
