Tower Hamlets Volunteer Cycling Rangers Project
Do you cycle in Bow, Bethnal Green, Mile End, the Isle of Dogs, Wapping or anywhere in Tower Hamlets?
Would you like to see cycling made easier for everyone?
The Volunteer Rangers project is a chance for local people who cycle in Tower Hamlets to highlight maintenance issues encountered whilst cycling, such as broken glass, pot-holes, and missing cycle route signs.
We are also giving volunteers a chance to point out places where simple, relatively cheap measures could be put in place to make sections of the borough easier to cycle through. This 'Audit' process would include suggestions such as "Put in dropped kerbs here to allow easy cycling through a stopped-up road", "Make this one-way street two-way for cycling", and "Remove this obstacle on the cycle lane/track". See the Audits Map for more examples.
The other two options you can take part in are cycle parking suggestions and promoting Smarter Travel via dropping leaflets in local cafes and helping out at promotional events.
The Volunteer Rangers project is a pilot project funded by Tower Hamlets Council and launched in Autumn 2009 as part of the Healthy Borough programme. Alix Stredwick, working for Transport Initiatives, a consultancy specialising in cycling projects, set up the Volunteer Cycling Rangers project for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
