18 July 2018
Tower Hamlets Wheelers
Monthly Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, 18th July 2018 19:30
Held at The Cabin, St. Margarets House, Old Ford Road.
Present: Christy, Keith, Alex, Owen, David T, Julie, Rob, Terry, Richard, Maciej, Megan.
Apologies: Helen
1. Workshop Saturday 21st July
People need to be there early as Keith will be heading to the Bikeworks sale to pick up parts.
2. Action Research
Megan Sharkey presented her proposal for action research where she would be involved in observing the group over a period of time as part of her research project, and then providing feedback to the group and encouraging reflective practice within the group. David and Julie provided the background to our current situation to Megan. She stated that she could help look at who we are engaging with and whether it had been successful. The group felt that this would be beneficial, and were happy to participate in the research if chosen by Megan.
Action –Megan to inform the group if she will be using THW as part of her research.
3. Parking on Estates
Maciej came to the group to ask for advice on how to get bicycle parking on his estate. Like many similar estates in TH there is no bike parking on his estate and he keeps his bike outside his neighbours flat on the landing.
Action – Maciej to contact Eastend Homes who run the estate with plans of where cycle parking could be sited as well as seeing if there is a residents committee that he could attend and raise it as an issue.
4. Mini-Holland Tour
Two tours organised to Watham Forest Mini-Holland:
1st Tour (Friday 6th July) attended by John Biggs, Kevin Brady, James King and Val Whitehead.
2nd Tour (Saturday 14th July) attended by Kyrsten Perry, and Mufeedah Bustin.
On the whole tours were very well received and a very good opportunity to demonstrate low traffic neighbourhoods to councillors.
Action – Alex to organise another date for a tour with David Edgar who was unable to attend this time around.
5. Rides and Events
Keith planning another afterworker ride to Aberfeldy area of TH. Awaiting response from councillors in order to arrange a date. Need to have sign up lists available to ensure new people turning up are going onto the right lists.
Glamour Ride (Friday 3rd August) – Rob confident all in hand.
Freecyle (Saturday 28th July) – Keith to lead as Serena may not be available. Going straight down CS2 into Fenchurch Street.
Action – Alex to email sign up lists around the committee. Once date confirmed for Aberfeldy afterworker volunteers required to scout out area if councillors are coming.
6. Meeting with the Borough (Wednesday 25th July)
Julie, Alex and Owen available to attend. Number of issues to be raised:
- Finishing of QW6
- New North-South route
- Demonstrating of manifesto pledges by mayor.
- THW involvement at pre-consultation stage.
- Schemes which don’t seem to get the basics right!
- Bike parking
- CS2 finishing.
Action – Julie, Alex and Owen to meet prior to the meeting to discuss how to bring up above points. Alex to dig out email from Josh Peck stating that we were to be statutory consultees on schemes.
7. Meeting with Rabina Khan
Action – Alex to send chaser email to Rabina regarding issues with cyclists on CS3.
8. Air Quality Action Board
Just missed the last meeting. Aim to get someone from the Wheelers going to each meeting and promote traffic reduction as an air quality improvement action. Currently doesn’t seem to be considered. Meetings are occurring within office hours, which makes attending for volunteer groups difficult.
9. Limehouse Anti-Cycling Humps
Installed on a bridge in Limehouse on the approach to Ropemakers Fields. Bridge is owned by Canal and Riverside Trust, and is a public right of way. Seem to have been installed by a private estate. One cyclist has already been injured after coming off on them. Councillor James King has raised it with the highways and planning enforcement teams.
