Down to Downe Ride

Saturday, 1 March 2014 - 9:30am - 5:00pm

NOTE: DATE CHANGED

Join the Wheelers this Saturday for a moderate 20 or 30mile ride through London to the North Downs and back.

We'll follow the Waterlink way from Greenwich to West Wickham and then head out to the North Downs countryside. Our destination is the pretty village of Downe, home to Down House, the former home of Charles Darwin. Lunch will be in the village with pub, cafe and picnic options available.

After lunch there will be two options;
1) Stay and look around Down House and museum (entry £10) and return from Orpington station, 3miles probably self-guided (making total distance approx 20miles), Oyster fare: £3.50
2) Guided ride back to Greenwich via back roads (approx 30miles total).

Lots of dropout stations en route, all within the Oyster zones. On the way out we will ride the Waterlink way which is mostly traffic free paths. Then onto country lanes on the downs. The return trip will use back roads as much as possible but may have some busier stretches.

Suitable for all ages and all bikes, everyone welcome. We will probably have a tea stop en-route to Downe in the morning if required.

Meet at Cutty Sark Gardens, outside the foot tunnel entrance at 9.30am.

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
