South London Parks and Open Spaces (and maybe a bit of Music)

10 July 2011

The  route includes the parks and open spaces of South London between Hilly  Fields  (Lewisham) and Myatt Fields (Lambeth), with lots of Southwark  green spaces in between.  Apart from the riding, the plan is to highlight both the varied history and how the parks and other spaces have changed today.

There are plenty of food stops (and toilets) on route, and we plan to stop for lunch in Peckham Rye,  Dulwich  or Brockwell Park. Bring a picnic and sit outside, or if it is rainy or you feel lazy, there are large cafes at all of these parks. And where is the “maybe music”?  Myatts Fields has a bandstand used by local contemporary musicians – with luck we will be there at the right time to hear them.

Time: 10.30 start at the Southwark Needle. (south side of London Bridge)
Feeder rides: 09.30 start at London Fields (Hackney, Lamb Lane entrance) and 10.00 start on top of the Green Bridge near Mile End station.

The ride distance: 25.4 miles round trip starting and finishing at the Needle. If you don't want to stay for the whole day you can drop out earlier but will need to find your own way home.

This ride is suitable for all types of bike and will be at an easy pace, with nobody left behind (unless you are late at the start!). No need to book in advance, just turn up on the day at one of the three meeting points. If you have any questions though please contact me or one of the ride leaders – Ian (07735 493579) and Nick (07973 416214)

Ride difficulty:
Easy/Moderate
Ride distance:
25 miles

If you came on this ride and would like to write a report or send us some pictures please mail rides@towerhamletswheelers.org.uk and we will publish them here.
